RE: Bangkok Post | Distress rising over negative letters, Letters, October 28th.
San Francisco Visitor brings up a good point regarding the level of negativity often found in Postbag. Negativity or unending complaining about some factor of our life here in Thailand without even the thinnest of hope of effecting change or further informing readers serves no purpose. Those letter writers just venting or attacking previous writers could find another outlet for their rage. However, information is critical and people being run over by busses, global warming, traffic, political scandals, greed and violence are as much of a part of the culture here as feel good stories about the floating markets and artistic events.
The rest of the world has yet to discover the most negative news this country has to offer to date. If the violence in the three southern most provinces were just a bit closer to our tourist centers it would be a top world news story almost everyday. In just over three years, it is estimated that more than 2,500 people have lost there lives to the Muslim insurgency in the south. I suspect the actual numbers are approaching twice as many dead. No one knows or reports on the total injuries sustained by the men, women and children who live in constant fear in the region. One the plus side, for San Francisco Visitor, the good news yesterday is that we had only one deputy village chief beheaded and one woman killed by a bomb. It was considered a good day for the potential victims.
