Officials of the People Power Party (PPP) have announced the start of a fast track process to amend five articles of the Thai Constitution. A motion will be made to amend articles 163, 190, 237, 266 and 309, including abolition of article 309 altogether. Article 309 of Constitution provides amnesty for members of the former military junta and legitimizes junta appointed committees such as the Assets scrutiny Committee which is currently pressing the case against former Prime Minister Thaksin. The Democrat party strongly opposes the amendments. Party spokesperson Jurin Laksanvisit suggests that if the amendments of constitution are approved, legislators that have been accused of election fraud in the past will be pardoned and allowed to reenter politics. Some in the Democrat party say that the passage of the amendments will lead to more division within Thai society. PPP predicts that the amendments will pass and the process will be completed within ninety days.
