Thai University Law Students Denounce PPP lawmakers to amend the Thailand Constitution

A group of Thai academics led by Somkid Lertpaitoon of Thammasat University law school has denounced the move my PPP lawmakers to amend the Thai constitution.
The current constitution was implemented during the recent period when Thailand was ruled by a military coup. Article 122 of the constitution forbids conflict of interest legislation. The academics accuse PPP lawmakers seeking to amend the constitution to protect former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and also several PPP politicians accused of vote buying. They claim such a move is in violation of article 122 which also allows for impeachment proceedings to be initiated by a group of 120 MPs or 20,000 eligible voters.
One of the articles PPP is seeking to amend is article 237, which if amended, would change the outcome of the investigation by the Assets Scrutiny Committee currently looking into business dealings by former Prime Minister Thaksin. This is strongly opposed by the People’s alliance for Democracy (PAD), and anti-Thaksin group. PAD plans to ask the Attorney-General and Constitution Court make rulings on the proposed amendments.
