Chiang Mai | Songkran Partiers to Have a Dam Good Time
(1com Thai News)
The Bhumibol dam is at the service of partiers in the upcoming Songkran festival.
It was announced by Tanarat Poommakasikorn, deputy director of the dam that from 38 to 43 million more cubic meters of water per day will be released during Songkran to insure that drunken party crazed revelers will have enough water to fully drench their fellow citizens with complete abandon during the festival which marks the Thai New Year. Mr. Tanarat urged the soon to be inebriated, out of control, celebrants, who could care less, to conserve water because it would be needed for generating electricity during the summer.
In Chiang Mai meanwhile, the Mae Kuang dam is at its lowest level in ten years and the reservoir is at only 20% of capacity. Farmers are facing such shortages that violent altercations have been reported over access to irrigation water for rice. Higher prices for rice have convinced some farmers to grow a second crop this year, leading to even more water usage than normal. Mae Kuang dam offices have been inundated with complaints from farmers who worry about crop losses due to water shortage. Some farmers have even demanded the cut off of water to the city of Chiang Mai, citing that the purpose of the dam was to provide water for farmers and not drunken orgies of water dowsing of partiers from giant vats in the back of pickup trucks or for wetting the T-shirts of college coeds in Chiang Mai during Songkran.
The Provincial Waterworks Authority is estimating that there is enough water to last through the dry season in spite of Songkran and Chiang Mai tourist hotels generally have their own storage tanks to protect the supply available to their guests. Prepare for some wet fun next week.
