Price of Rice Not Nice in Hong Kong
(1com Thai News)
A rice shortage is to Hong Kong what Godzilla is to Tokyo.
A 30 per cent rise in the cost of rice has led to hoarding and panic buying among residents of Hong Kong as the specter of living a day without rice casts a shadow across the city of 6.9 million. Rumors of regional shortages spread through the city like wildfire sending people scurrying to the nearest supermarket to insure their stock of Asia’s most indispensable food.
Thailand is Hong Kong’s major supplier of rice. Trembling in horror, all eyes have turned westward seeking assurances from Thailand the rice will be forthcoming. Nothing to fear, according to Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Frederick Ma in response to the crisis after his meeting with the Thai consul-general. Thailand has announced that the supply of rice will be unimpeded and that any fears of a shortage are unfounded.
As shockwaves reverberated through mainland China the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing was forced to act, announcing that China would make up any shortfall in stocks of white rice. White rice, after the removal of the husk, bran, and germ, contains 0% of essential vitamins and minerals needed for basic health. Hong Kong is almost totally dependent on importation of food to feed its teaming masses. China is its biggest supplier of most foodstuffs.
