Thieves Threaten Highway Safety in Thailand
(1com Thai News)
Missing road signs, highway lighting out due to stolen power lines, even reflective studs embedded in roadways stolen. The Thai highway system is more dangerous due to theft of these safety devices. About five million baht worth of highway safety equipment has been stolen in the last six months.

The Highways department has responded by sending teams to patrol areas where thefts have been occurring. Public service radio stations are also working with the public to raise awareness so the public will assist in the prevention of thefts and help deter thieves.

The director general of the Highways department, Nikorn Boonsri is in charge of protecting highway assets. He stated recently that since 1999, 45 million baht worth of Highway Department property has been stolen, mostly in the central provinces around Bangkok.

Copper wire in power lines used by lighting systems is highly valuable. Thieves often use yellow vehicles and wear overalls to create the appearance of highway workers when stealing equipment. The public is requested to report suspicious activity of this sort.

Local police have been asked to step up enforcement against dealers in used goods who trade in public property illegally. No numbers are available of traffic deaths and injuries due to missing highway equipment.
