Whole 2007 Constitution Should be Amended Says Samak
The 2007 constitution should be amended according to Samak Sundaravej, the current prime minister of Thailand. The constitution was approved by voters last August. However, the constitution was not written by, nor was the referendum conducted by elected representatives, but by an unelected body appointed by a military junta. The currently ruling People Power Party (PPP) has passed a resolution to amend the entire charter. The party’s decision will be sent to the five parties who are in the coalition in hopes of gaining their support. It is unknown how the amended constitution will affect the case against former Prime Minister Thaksin, but it has been the cause of speculation that the case being pursued against Thaksin by the Asset Scrutiny Committee will have to be dropped if certain proposed revisions of the constitution should pass. Mr. Samak has stated that he does not anticipate any unrest to result from the process of amending the constitution.
