54 illegal immigrants from Burma were found dead in truck being used to smuggle them into Phuket. The truck driver fled the scene after discovering that many of his illegal passengers including 17 men and 37 women were dead. The immigrants were reportedly from Song Island in Burma, and paid 5,000 baht each to be transported to Phuket from the Burmese border.

Many Burmese fleeing military rule in their country come to Thailand in search of employment.
Deputy police commander of Ranong, Narin Bussayawit, said that the truck had a ventilation system, but it was apparently not working. It is unknown at this time if the system failed during the trip or if it was broken before the journey began. The container was six meters long and 2.2 meters wide. 121 persons were inside. Police were notified by local villagers of the abandoned truck whose driver fled the scene. He departed as soon as it became apparent that some of his human cargo was dead.
Authorities in Thailand are making official notification to the Burmese government about the incident.
