Sereepisut Taemeeyas, the former national police chief who was transferred to an inactive post within the Prime Minister’s office following a spate of allegations of serious misconduct has yet to appear in public since being stripped of all official duties.
He has been accused of being involved in a corruption scheme surrounding the Royal Thai police offices rental of 6,200 vehicles at a cost to the state of 9.8 billon baht. ($308.6 million) Accusations against him have also included abuse of power in transferring police colonels, the breaking of regulations during the appointment of police officers of high rank using foul language in an official document. An inquiry committee composed of four members including Attorney-General Chaikasem Nitisiri will conduct hearings on the allegations.
Some see the move as retribution for Sereepisut’s involvement during the period when Thailand was ruled by a military junta which seized control of the government from democratically elected officials, and his role in suppressing support for former Prime Minister Thaksin during the time the junta ruled Thailand. At the time of his departure, Sereepisut said he would take court action against Prime Minister Samak if it could be proven that his transfer by Samak was an abuse of power.
