Songkran in Full Swing in Chiang Mai
Songkran is a yearly festival marking the Thai New Year and is considered to be Thailand’s most important holiday. This year it lasts from April 12 through 16. It is also considered to be a break from the hot season in which water is thrown on everyone by everyone else to cool off as well as for fun.
Songkran revelers in Chiang Mai have taken to the streets in full force. Armies of squirt gun toting partiers descended on the Thapae Gate area yesterday in a show of complete disregard towards being soaking wet. A huge traffic jam ensued leaving motorists unarmed with squirt guns to be taunted and barraged with water. Topless tuk-tuks patrolled the area, willing to take fearless tourists though a gauntlet of water throwing mania.
For those who want to arm themselves and fully participate in the festivities, squirt gun emporiums have sprung up on streets all over the city. Squirt gun technology has been making improvements so that now, back mounted water tanks with pressurized hoses are quite common and can be devastating when operated by a determined and well-trained nine year old.
Songkran is celebrated throughout all parts of Thailand and by all classes of Thai society. Farangs (foreigners) are encouraged and expected to participate, so prepare to be soaked just like anybody else.
