(1com Thai News)
Thailand and Laos are beefing up border security in order to stem the flow of drugs and trade in endangered species across the border. Encroachment by police and military across the border from either country is still disallowed.
Thai Prime Minister and Defense Minister Samak Sundaravej, and Lao Defense Minister Lt Gen Duangchay Phichit held a meeting as part of Greater Mekong Sub-region leaders’ summit. Thailand’s Military Supreme Commander and secretary-general of the National Security Council, together with other officials from other relevant agencies also attended.
The meeting also focused on improving the passage of tourists across the border as well as problems associated with persons of dual citizenship. Both sides agreed to streamline border regulations to better administrate the border.
Also on the agenda was the fate of 7,800 Hmong refugees living in camps in Thailand. Prime Minister Samak voiced Thailand’s willingness to repatriate the people if they show a willingness to return to Laos. Laos defense minister Duangchay said that Laos was willing to accept them after verification that there were in fact Laotian. The U.N. refugee committee must also approve the repatriation.
