Chinese afraid of Being Burned Again in Olympic Torch Relay
According to a story in the Chinese People’s Daily newspaper, Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has promised to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing. The paper also claims Mr. Samak has promised that Thailand will give full support to China during the games. The Olympic torch relay has been disrupted in European countries over China’s human rights record.
Thai foreign minister Noppadon Pattama has denounced the disruption of the torch relay in Europe, and suggested that a peaceful demonstration would not violate Thai law. He also said that ‘Thailand believes that politics should not be linked with the Olympic Games.’
According to a spokesman from the Chinese embassy, ‘The strong protests in western countries have caused the Chinese embassy big headaches, and they are seeking close cooperation from the Thai side to prevent any undesirable fallout during the two-day torch relay event’ It is reported that the Chinese embassy has asked Thai authorities to be on guard against three main groups. Those groups include the religious cults of Falungong and the Llamas of Tibet, as well as pro-Taiwan groups.
Mr. Noppadon did not confirm Chinese reports of Mr. Samak’s plans to attend the games in Beijing.
Activists are expected to line the route to protest against the crackdown and arrest of dissidents in Tibet last month.
