Malaysian Prime Minister to resign

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the current Prime Minister of Malaysia has announced plans to resign his post, later this year, after a poor election showing for his party. His deputy Prime Minister and defense minister, Najib Razak, is expected to take over the vacated post.

The national news agency reports that discussions are underway over steps for a transition of power. According to pro-government news sources such as the New Straits Times, Abdullah “acknowledged that he was one of the causes of the setbacks suffered by Umno and Barisan Nasional in the 12th general election.” Last month.

Members of Umno, one of the coalition parties, have called for Abdullah to resign sooner. On Friday, International Trade Minister Muhyidden Yassin said that Abdullah and Hajib will meet and “matters such as when the transition will take place and so on will be discussed.”

This is the first time since the formation of Malaysia that the ruling party has suffered such heavy losses in polling. They have lost control of five states, and now control less than a two thirds majority in parliament.

Abdullah stated at a meeting on Saturday, “I admit I was one of the causes for these losses.”
