200,000 Tons of Rice Vanish in Thailand
Thailand’s national warehouses are missing 200,000 tons of rice according to government sources. The estimated cost of the missing rice is $101million.
Rice is selling at record prices.
Because of the high prices, many rice farmers are not selling their crops, but instead are waiting for prices to rise further. Farmers and middlemen are also not participating in government programs to stockpile rice.
World rice markets are experiencing prices never before seen. Rice exportation from Thailand is soaring. Since January, rice exports are 166% above last year’s total, at 3.26 million tons as compared to 1.96 million tons for the same period last year.
Even though 200,000 tons of rice is missing, government stockpiles still amount to over 2 million tons. White rice, after husking and polishing contains 0% of any valuable nutrients. What happened to the missing rice is unknown.
