Death Stalks Roads During Songkran

As of last Sunday, the third day of the deadly holiday traffic season, 76 deaths and 1,003 injuries were reported. These figures are well above last years figures.

For some unknown reasons, most road accidents involve teenage motorcyclists in rural areas. Alcohol consumption may play a role as well.

Most of the deaths seem to be occurring in the Northern provinces. Anucha Mokhawat, director of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has ordered more police checkpoints in that region. He also suggested that a full ban on alcohol should be imposed for Sogkran because drunk driving is the main cause of injuries and deaths during this time period. Dr. Thaejing Siripanit of the Don’t Drive Drunk foundation echoed the call for a ban on alcohol sales during Songkran.

Meanwhile, the Thai Red Cross has reported that its blood supply has been severely drained due to road accidents, and is calling on blood donors to come forward.
