Olympic Torch a Hot Topic | Bangkok, Thailand
The Olympic torch arrived in Bangkok after a lively controversial trip through Europe and India. Thai police are warning that interference with the torch relay will not be tolerated. Protesters are requested to behave in accordance with the law. The flight carrying the torch with its Chinese security detail landed at Don Mueng airport Friday morning. The flight landed far away from the civilian terminal. A small group of local Chinese Thais were on hand to wave flags and welcome the plane.
Police spokesman Watcharapol Prasanratchakij, stated that “Action will be taken” against those who illegally disrupt the Torch Relay. So far, it has been protected by a contingent of Chinese security teams because the Chinese government is hesitant to trust Thai security.
Various human rights groups are planning protest along the torch’s route. Suppression of human rights in Tibet as well as China’s support of repressive regimes in Africa is the reason for most of the protests.
