Thai Songkran Celebration Leaves 360 Dead
360 people died during the “seven dangerous days” of Sonkran in Thailand this year. 4,794 others were injured. Motorcycles contributed 80% of the figures according to Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.
Alcohol contributed to at least 31% of injuries and deaths. Speeding and reckless driving were also cited as responsible for many incidents.
On the bright side, there was one fewer death this year than last, a monument to the safety awareness programs instituted by the government. If the improvement continues at the current rate Songkran with be death free by the year 2368. Thursday, the last of the “seven dangerous days” saw 287 accidents resulting in 36 deaths and 310 injured.
