Thaksin’s Wife Testifies in Tax Evasion Turmoil
Former Prime Minister Thaksin’s wife testified in Criminal Court Friday in regard to the tax evasion case around transfer of shares in Shin Corportion stock in 1997. Potjaman Shinawatra, wife of Mr. Thaksin has been charged along with Bannapot Damapong and Mrs. Thaksin’s secretary, Khanchanapa Honghern with evading 730 million baht in taxes and lying to authories when questioned later. Khanchanapa only faces one charge for conspiring to evade taxes.
Shin Corp. was the company owned at that time by Mr. Thaksin. Thaksin supporters claim that the charges are politically motivated. Charges of corruption have swirled around the Thaksin family for years, leading to a military coup in September 2006. Thaksin only recently returned to Thailand to face the charges.
Potjaman avoided facing the news media by using the back entrance to the courthouse.
