Olympic Torch in Bangkok Enflames Passions, but No One Gets Scorched
The Olympic Torch passed through Bangkok with out any interruptions on Saturday. Pro-Tibet and Pro-China demonstrators shouted at one another, but the torch relay was uninterrupted.
This was the first Olympic relay to pass through Bangkok, Thailand so local officials were happy to see that nothing occurred to mar the event. According to police, there were no problems for the torchbearers, who were greeted with cheers along the route.
Protestors were out in force to denounce the recent crackdowns in Tibet and what they still consider the illegal occupation of Tibet by China. China in turn claims that Tibet has long been a part of China and that their “occupation” is actually liberation of the Tibetans from a feudal society which was held in place by a theocratic dictatorship. The Chinese government recruited Chinese students to hold a Pro-China demonstration.
