Phony Thai Fishballs Foul Funeral
Thai Fish balls suspected of containing poisonous Puffer fish sicken 140 people in the Ban Luang district on Friday. The suspect fish balls were served in a soup at a funeral. Victims experienced numbness and weakness in the extremities, as well as severe vomiting. Those suffering symptoms were taken to local hospitals. Hospital spokesmen said that all the sufferers were guests at the same funeral. Seven persons hospitalized had consumed enough toxin to be considered lethal.
The fish balls were bought at Ban Pong fish market and were advertised as Pla Krai fresh water fish. 800 balls were purchased. The remaining fish balls are being tested.
The seven severe cases are listed in serious condition and are using breathing apparatus. Puffer fish is sometimes sold in place of more expensive fish by dishonest fishermen and fish dealers. It is sometimes prepared by Japanese chefs in a fashion where the poison is rendered harmless. In that situation, the chef is expected to commit seppuku if any customers are harmed.
