Unhelmeted Bikers in Thailand Face 500 baht Fines
Motorcyclists in Bangkok who do not wear proper safety helmets will find themselves owing a 500 baht fine when apprehended by the metropolitan Police Bureau starting immediately. The fine will double if passengers are not wearing a helmet either. The tough new standards are being implemented to reduce traffic deaths.
This is a renewal of efforts to stem the tide of injuries which result from motorbike accidents. Head injuries from motorbike crashes are by far the number one type of accidental injury in Thailand. The new enforcement by Police project hopes to at least reduce the number of injuries and fatalities in Bangkok.
Police will be setting up roadblocks to catch motorbike drivers who ignore the law. Violators will be stopped and issued a ticket.
Another common violation of the law is motorbike drivers carrying more than one passenger. For carrying more than one passenger, the fine is also 500 baht. Motorbikes are also coming under more scrutiny for failing to obey general traffic regulations such as driving the wrong way, driving on sidewalks, running red lights and driving recklessly.
The metropolitan Police have issued this public warning so that drivers of motorbikes will be informed that new stricter enforcement of the current laws will give them notice to change their ways immediately.
