Samak to Call Early Election to Amend Charter and Dissolve House
Prime Minister Samak, while visiting Malaysia, spoke to a group of Thai businessmen, informing them of changes on the horizon for Thailand’s government. He stated that after the constitution was amended, there would be an election so that the new elected government could continue under a charter that was written by democratically elected officials.
It is predicted that Samak will dissolve the house as soon as the current charter is amended. Many have criticized the rewriting of the charter, saying that the only purpose for the move is to benefit the People Power Party (PPP), and former Prime Minister Thaksin, as well as the 110 former executives of the Thai Rak Thai party who were banned from politics by the armed military coup that overthrew the previous elected government. The Thai Constitution Court is currently contemplating the dissolution of the PPP for alleged poll fraud in the recent elections. If the currently proposed amendments to the charter pass, this dissolution would not occur. With the amendments in place, some say, Mr. Thaksin and the 110 Thai Rak Thai politicians would be free from any consequences for their alleged corruption. Corruption commissioner Vicha Mahakhun says that the final say in the dissolution of PPP is still in the hands of the Constitution Court, and fraud trials would continue. He went on to say that ‘The PPP is seeking to open a new channel for its legal battle. It wants to raise the question of whether all dissolution cases should be dropped after the 2007 charter is abrogated. And all this is disputable.’
A drafter of the armed junta imposed charter, Seri Suwanpanont, said that under the current charter, only an amnesty could allow the banned politicians from reentering Thai politics. He added, ”The case is closed. The constitution cannot be used to absolve their wrongdoing.” He also said, however that the amendments proposed to the charter could change the out come of the dissolution and corruption cases against Thaksin and the banned politicians.
