Vietnam Competes for Food Exports
Thai food exporters are facing stiff and growing competition for food exports to Europe from Vietnam. Thailand’s National Food Institute reports that the value of produce exported to Europe last year was 20.2 billion baht, down from 20.6 billion a year before. The association estimates that Vietnam now controls about 30% of the export market to Europe. General secretary of Thai Fruit and Vegetable Producers, Supakit Rattanasirimontre said that the Thai agricultural industry was being hurt by a lack of crop yield and government neglect. Statistics suggest that about 40% of fruits and vegetables from Thailand have been replaced by Vietnamese vegetables in some supermarkets in Europe. This is especially troubling in the current climate of food shortages. Mr. Supakit says that quality control in the production of Thai foods is lacking and leads to their rejection in the market. He stated, ”One problem that needs to be addressed is our quality liability. They rejected our products two years ago but we have not done anything to change.”

Vietnam has surged ahead in agricultural development by being organized and efficient, resulting in cutting production costs, while Thailand has been stagnating and disorganized for the last decade. Vietnam had also improved packaging for export and modernizing the production process from start to finish, with very positive results. It has also improved its infrastructure including soon to finished upgrades to its international airport which will give further advantages over Thailand. Mr. Supakit concludes, ”In the near future, Vietnamese products will be shipped directly to Europe and other destinations. The country will have even more advantages over Thai products.”
