A lecturer at Thamasat University has been dismissed after allegations surfaced that he offered a female student a better grade in exchange for oral sex. The giving of better grades in exchange for sex is against University policy as well as Thai Law. The lecturer has been arrested.
Thammasat rector Surapol Nitikraipoj made a formal apology on national television yesterday to the public, students and parents. The third year student has filed a complaint with police after refusing the lecturer’s lewd offer for the second time. Another student has come forward saying she performed oral sex on the teacher in exchange for better grades in the past. The lecturer has been identified as Kamthorn Cherdchukiat, 33 years of age, of the engineering department.
In his apology, Mr. Surapol stated, ”[If found guilty] Mr Kamthorn could be dismissed from the civil service, a maximum penalty under university regulations,” the rector said. His action would be recorded, which means he cannot apply for any other civil service position. He could not apply for teaching posts elsewhere, either. The university regrets the incident and apologizes.”
The engineering faculty is rechecking all grades given by Mr. Kamthorn to see if any pattern of abuse can be found. According to the dean of the engineering faculty Uruya Veesakul, Mr Kamthorn had been a lecturer’s assistant for six years before being made a full lecturer just this year.
If convicted, Mr Kamthorn could face a maximum of ten years in prison.
