First Official Visit of Burmese Leader to Thailand
Thein Sein, Burma’s unelected military Ruler will visit Thailand on his first official visit this week. He is scheduled to arrive Tuesday and begin a series of talks with Prime Minister Samak, regarding trade, drug trafficking, and the development of transportation arteries to speed trade between the two neighboring states. A new modern transportation system will create better trade and prosperity between Thailand and Burma. Also on the agenda will be talks regarding a hydroelectric project and natural gas. The ongoing food crisis in Asia and how the two neighbors can deal with continued problems in that area will be discussed as well. There is a proposal to create a memorandum of understanding on an agreement for contract farming between the two nations. His first stop will be to the Dusit Maha Prasart Throne Hall, where he will be paying respects to the late Princess Galyani Vadhana, The sister of Thailand’s current Monarch. General Thien is expected to have an entourage of 30 people. He will also visit Thailand’s King for a meeting regarding the future relation between the two countries.
Meanwhile in events leading to the next Burmese referendum for a new constitution, voters living outside the country in Singapore were not allowed to cast early votes because many wore T-shirts that were inscribed with the slogan, “Say No.” The number of Burmese citizens eligible to vote, living in Singapore, ranges in estimation from 30,000 to 100,000 people. Those wearing T-shirts with slogans were not allowed to enter the embassy to vote. Most international observers claim that the referendum is a sham to prop the highly unpopular military junta that has run the government for decades. The junta received worldwide condemnation for violently suppressing demonstrations last year. The upcoming referendum is the first time citizens have voted in 18 years.
