Caught Red-Handed, Passport Forger Confesses | 1com News Thailand
A Bangladeshi man has been arrested in a case involving hundreds of fake Thai and other foreign passports. A police raid resulted in the seizure of computers and the forged passports in the home of Mohammed Karim, 56 years old, in Bangkok’s Bang Kae district on Saturday. A police spokesman said “Karim confessed and he was charged with conspiring to make counterfeit passports for sale, and making fake visas.” He faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years in jail.
According to Police Special Operations Police chief Chaktip Chaichinda, Mr. Karim’s operation is possibly one of the largest operations of its type ever uncovered in Thailand. Mr. Karim has confessed to selling false passports which are distributed by gangs often participating in illegal drugs, prostitution, smuggling and even terrorism, according to Police chief Chaktip. He added, “This guy is rich. He has a BMW. He said he made about 300,000-400,000 baht per month (around U.S.$13,500).”
The raid also netted 680 fake visa seals and stamps, as well as 577 fake passports, and a little over 1,600 counterfeit documents for faking US passports.
Mr. Karim had a partner that he said rented the house for him in Soi Phetkasem 62, turning it into and illegal factory for creating the fake documents.
Police have indicated that this is the biggest operation of this type to be uncovered in five years. Criminal gangs widely distribute fake passports and documents in Bangkok allowing other criminal groups to operate illegally around the world. It is unknown how far ranging the operation was or how many years it had been in operation.
