Thai Military Takeover Rumors Driving Samak Coup Coup
During his weekly address called “Talk in Samak’s Style” on Sunday, Prime Minister Samak addressed the continuous rumors that had been floating about all week regarding a military takeover of the government. A portion of his televised address to the nation was devoted to pointing the finger at the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) which had caused a stir with demonstrations against his government on Friday. He accused the PAD of trying to goad the military into another coup as they did during the Thaksin Shinawatra administration. “Their intention was to stir-up violence but that would be difficult because peace has already been restored to our country,” said Samak. He then turned his ire against certain academic groups. “I can’t allow a one-sided attack on the government by these academics who do it through the media,” he said. “That’s why I have to continue with my weekly television program because the government needs to give its side of the story. We can’t allow these people to say as they please and have the government sit and listen to them without a channel to defend itself, which was the case was during the Thaksin Shinawatra administration.” He continued that he heard about PAD activities during his flight from Malaysia, commenting; “The Boeing 777 is a very good plane but it has no place for me to vomit.” The weekly program is very popular all over Thailand.
Last Friday, two opposing groups, Pro-People Power Party (PPP) and PAD demonstrators clashed loudly in front of Thammasat University hall where the PAD was holding a seminar. 500 police were required to keep the two groups from each other. There was minor shouting and shoving. Samak’s comments regarding the incident were in keeping with his style. “I cannot stop (People Power) party members who want to join a pro-government demonstration,” he added.
