Crybaby Journalists Claim Prime Minister is a Potty-Mouth
The Thai Journalists Association, the Thai Broadcasting Journalists Association, and the Confederation of Thai Journalists organized a forum yesterday that slammed Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej for resorting to distasteful verbal communication and a rough conduct to bully the media. Mr. Samak’s antagonistic dialogue with the press was the focus of deliberations at the round-table.
Offered at the discussion was a report on his behavior and rude interaction strategies as seen in media interviews dating as far back as October of last year when he reappeared on the political scene as chief of the People Power party.
Critics said his strategy was aimed at giving the public the sense that the media was the cause of all the country’s troubles.
A media reform activist and member of the research team, Uajit Virojtrairat, informed the meeting that Mr. Samak’s aggressive speech ran opposed to free growth of democracy.
She also said that his rebuff of criticism reflects his lack of sympathy to the press’ dignity and his ”authoritative” attitudes hindered open democracy and basic rights.
Mr. Samak has also used a number of devices to steer clear of answering reporters’ questions and inquiries. His tactics included obfuscation, beating around the bush, and giving information which was extraneous and beside the point. He could also be mocking, or assail reporters outright, using rude and crude language. She went on to say that his non-verbal interactions such as gesticulation and voice tone were also characteristically impolite and reflected his belligerence. He even scowled or pointed his finger at journalists when he was disgruntled, sometimes hurting their feelings on purpose.
