Dam It, There Are Too Many Dams Already | Cambodia
The Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia is seeking private venture capital to construct 14 new hydropower dams valued at more than $3.2 billion, according to a administration account released Sunday. The document entitled Prime Investment Information in Cambodia details possible private speculation opportunities around the country, as well as hydroelectric dam construction. According to the statement, 14 dams of diverse sizes and capacity are expected to be capable of generating at least 1,850 megawatts of power. Four of the 14 are also earmarked to supply irrigation, though all but two of the 14 are currently only at a planning stage.
Of the proposed sites, only one is on the Mekong River, near Sambor Falls in the eastern part of Kratie province, and according to the report, the project there is planned in two separate stages. An administration source said regardless of the tremendous potential for damage of the Sambor dam, it will only go ahead if their northern neighbor, Laos constructs contentious dam projects further upstream which Cambodia worries will devastate its fisheries and leave it with nothing to lose. The statement estimates that Kratie, where the Mekong runs powerfully, is presently producing a capacity of 1,570 kilovolt-amperes, but could possibly have a capacity of up to 2,290 with the new dams in place. The rest of the projected dams are dotted along diverse tributaries all about the countryside.
