Northern Thailand under Severe Weather Threat | Chiang Mai

Chaing Mai was racked with powerful winds and rain on Saturday bringing power outages and traffic headaches. Tropical cyclone Nargis which struck Burma on Saturday is moving east-northeast at about 15 kilometers per hour dropping heavy rain in its path. Very heavy rain is being reported in many places in the North and the Central regions of Thailand.

People in the western part of Thailand, especially around Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Tak, Kamphaengphet, Lamphun, Lampang, Phitsanulok, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phichit, Uthai Thani, Nakhon Sawan, Kanchanaburi, Ranong, Chanthaburi and Trart provinces should beware of possible flooding conditions for the duration of this weather episode.

Weather reports said Cyclone Nargis battered Rangoon on Saturday. It separated roofs from houses, toppled trees and power lines and required the armed forces establishment to close the airport. Electricity was out on Friday evening. There were no reports of deaths as of today. Burmese meteorological officials cautioned that Cyclone Nargis could generate a storm surge of as much as four meters in coastal areas.

High seas and dangerous conditions are likely in all parts of the Andaman Sea. All vessels should proceed cautiously and small boats should stay ashore for the duration of this period. Rangoon has reported heavy damage with many building destroyed in nearby areas. Rescue teams and foreign NGOs are unable to reach stricken areas because the military junta is wary of outsiders.
