Burmese prisoners killed by Police and Soldiers in Rangoon after cyclone hits Burma
Soldiers and police executed political prisoners at Insein Prison in Rangoon in the capital of Burma. The inmates there rioting, a total of 36 prisoners were shot dead and 70 injured at the infamous Burmese prison moments after Cyclone Nargis hit the shores of Burma.
The report came after the Burmese authorities raised the estimate of the dead to more than 80,000. Insein Prison houses many political prisoners who oppose the current military rule, it has been described by inmates as ‘the darkest hell-hole in Burma.’
Cyclone Nargis brought with her, 120mph winds, bringing huge storm surge that engulfed towns and villages.
The regime’s paranoia has slowed aid to the Country of Burma.
Social Welfare Minister Maung Maung Swe said that 95% of homes in the delta town of Bogalay have been destroyed. ‘More deaths were caused by the tidal wave than the storm itself. The wave was up to 12 feet high and it swept away and inundated half the houses in low-lying villages. There was nowhere to flee.’ NGO’s fear the death toll in Burma will continue to rise. 1 million people were estimated to be homeless.
Burma’s military junta has ruled for 46 years and are obstructing the flow of foreign aid and supplies.
‘The UN has asked the Burmese government to open its doors. The Burmese government replied: ‘Give us money, we’ll distribute it.’ We can’t accept that said French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner. The UN disaster assessment team was stuck in Thailand overnight unable to obtain visas. The Burmese embassy in Bangkok was closed on Monday for a Thai holiday.
Countries around the world are offering help, but have yet to be invited in by the authorities, and aid agencies say that their staff are still waiting for visas.
Burma’s military rulers are deeply paranoid and suspicious of the outside world, particularly the USA, and many years of mismanagement, corruption and self-imposed economic isolation, the country’s infrastructure is creaking at the best of times, and their ability to distribute huge quantities of supplies across a vast area in dire circumstances is highly questionable. The World Food Program has begun distributing 800 tons of food.
