Thai Sports Hero Twins Become Bigger Heroes

Famous Thai tennis twins Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana became heroes of a different sort after they saved the wife and child of an Argentine player, Lucas Arnold, from a fire in their lodge yesterday. The siblings, who are in Bordeaux for a Challenger Series competition, were in their space on the third floor of the Quality Suites hotel, at the time the fire began.

Even as nearly all players were down below having breakfast, the hero twins were getting set for a fitness workout. The fire was in progress in room 315, booked to another player from Argentina, Eduardo Schwank.

Sonchat and Sanchai heard the fire alarm but did not realize how severe the fire was until they peeked out their hotel room door. “We were trying to find the exit but we could not see anything,” Sonchat said. “We called reception and they did not know much. So we wrapped towels around our faces and headed for any exit possible we could find.”
Whilst probing for an escape route, they heard the sound of a woman screaming for help and pounding on her room door. “When we opened the door, we saw Arnold’s wife and a child. She was thinking of jumping from her third floor room window,” Sanchai said.

The Thai heroes then wrapped towels about the woman and son, and then led them all the way through the thick smoke to the stairway about 30 meters away.

“She was very calm but anxious,” said Sonchat. “I think having her son with her helped her stay calm.”

Arnold, a doubles competitor, was enormously thankful to the twin heroes and joined them later in a practice match.
