Aung San Suu Kyi was allowed to vote today in Rangoon from her home

Burma set up referendum May 10th to approve a new constitution that favors the military’s control over any future elected government. According to the government poll that was done, over 92% of the Burmese people will vote in favor of new charter to constitution, that most election observers doubt. The vote will take place on Saturday, May 24th.

Burmese Activist Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been in house arrest since May of 2003, Burmese military arrested her claiming she was a threat to national security. Pro-Government Gangs beat her and her fellow activists in northern Burma, 70 freedom activists were murdered.

On Saturday Aung San Suu Kyi will have completed 5 years in House Arrest which is deemed legal detention for people deemed a “threat to national security, an American lawyer has stated that under Burma’s Article 10 of the State Protection Law 1975, Aung San Suu Kyi must be freed by Sunday as her 5-year detention period ends on Saturday. Security sources said the decision on whether Aung San Suu Kyi House Arrest would be extended would be made on May 27.

It is not likely that Aung San Suu Kyi will be freed due to political upheaval brought on by Political bargaining of Aid Support after Cyclone that killed over 133,000 Burmese on May 2nd. The Military government is under very critical international scrutiny for not keeping flow of aid to survivors of Cyclone Nargis.
