Cambodia: 40+ Thai Troops entered into Cambodia today due to rising tensions over the disputed land of an 11th-Century Hindu ancient temple on the border of Cambodia and Thailand, there was a stand-off with troops, but there has been no shootings as of yet. The Thai soldiers have positioned themselves at a Buddhist pagoda below the main temple compound and are in negotiations with Cambodian authorities.
Thailand’s military officers said Thai soldiers had been sent to protect Thailand’s sovereignty from Cambodia. Thai officials denied their troops had entered Cambodian borders.
The land around it have been the subject of a border dispute for decades. Thailand claims some of the land near Temple in Preah Vihear.
Earlier today, 3 protesters from Thailand were arrested for trespassing into the border of Cambodia without proper documentation. The 3 Thai’s entered in an attempt to to protest ongoing temple land dispute between Cambodia and Thailand.
Major-General Kanok Netakawesana said. “We have every right to deploy troops here to protect our sovereignty. There is no trespassing by our soldiers,” he said.
Cambodian troops are on alert but not to be the first to fire, Cambodia’s Hang Soth, head of the Cambodian agency in charge of the Hindu temple site.
Hang Soth said that a Thai Buddhist monk, a woman and a man went passed the proper checkpoint on Thai side and trespassed into a jungle and into Cambodia.
In 1962, an International Court awarded the ancient Hindu temple to Cambodia.
