Thailand, Cambodia deploy more troops to Cambodia-Thailand Border at Temple

Cambodia and Thailand both doubled their troops at border on land due to rising tensions over the disputed land of an 11th-Century Hindu ancient temple on the border of Cambodia and Thailand

Cambodia’s General Chea Keo said that Thailand now has more than 400 troops near the Preah Vihear Hindu temple, double the amount of 200 from the Wednesday. Cambodia has about 800 troops, up from 380 the day before.

The Thai troops crossed the border into Cambodian territory on Tuesday in renewed tensions over land near Cambodia’s Preah Vihear temple. Thailand maintains it is protecting its sovereignty and ensuring security, seeing that any protests with Thais at the temple remain safe, although a Thai military source has acknowledged the troops are on disputed ground.

Six Cambodian monks still reside at the ancient Hindu Temple, eating food from what Cambodian soldiers bring them.

Hundreds of Thais in Sisaket province blocked a group of Thailand PAD anti-government protesters from marching to Preah Vihear on Thursday. Many Thais shouted at the PAD protesters to go home.

On Wednesday, Cambodia agreed to meet with Thai defense minister on Monday to ease tensions.

Cambodian Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said Cambodia would not use force unless attacked and that the situation was stable.

Thai army commander General. Anupong Paojindasaid also said he his troops have been ordered not to use force.
