9 Thai judges selected to determine court future on abuse-of-power corruption case against X-PM Thaksin Shinawatra

Nine judges were selected yesterday to decide whether an abuse-of-power case against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra should go to trial.

The abuse-of-power corruption case concerns charges that Thaksin abused his power while serving as Prime Minister in replacing concession payments with an excise tax on telecom operators.

WHO WILL DECIDE THAKSIN’S FATE ?

The Supreme Court elected Judges Pairoj Wayupap, Pornphet Wichitchonchai, Boonrawd Tanprasert, Kasem Weerawong, Chalee Tapwimol, Ratana Kongkaew, Prateep Chalermphatarakul, Direk Ungkinan and Sumit Supadul, 7 are chief justices of the Supreme Court and 2 are senior judges.

The panel of 9 judges will hold their first session on September 3, 2008 to decide if the case merits judicial review. If the judges so decide, the 9 judges will try the abuse-of-power corruption case against Thaksin.

Thaksin’s defense team has 30 days to file an court objection to panel judges on grounds due to conflict of interest. The prosecution team states that Thaksin caused 66 billion baht in damages to Thailand by allowing Shin Corp to pay cheaper excise taxes rather than the higher fees of the Telecom concession.
