SAMAK VERDICT ‘GUILTY OF LIBEL’

Thailand’s Criminal Court handed down guilty verdict this morning against Samak, guilty of libel, that he and his friend Dusit Siriwan defamed former deputy Bangkok governor Samart Rajpolasidhi.

The court’s verdict was that former prime minister Samak and Dusit were guilty of libel. Both were sentenced to 2-year jail terms, with no suspension.

Thailand’s Criminal Court said it found no reason to grant leniency in the jail sentencing.

“The 2 defendants are leading figures with political experience who knew that their opinions could sway the public, yet they have repeatedly aired their malicious views on television although the judiciary has granted a number of opportunities for remorse and reform,” the Court said in its guilty verdict.

The defense can petition for a final appellate review by the Supreme Court within 30 days.
