Thai police arrest PAD core leader Major General Chamlong Srimuang
Thai police arrested PAD core leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) Major General Chamlong Srimuang when he arrived to vote today for the Bangkok governor election.
Chamlong and media tycoon Sondhi Limthongkul are said to be the most important PAD leaders. Sondhi Limthongkul has not been arrested, although an arrest warrant has been issued for Sondhi’s arrest.
The arrest was shortly after 8am Sunday at the election booth at the Seth Sathien School in the Dusit district of Bangkok.
Chamlong was allowed to vote before being arrested.
Some PAD members said Chamlong intended to be arrested.
Chamlong was taken from the polling location and taken to a Border Patrol Police Station just north of Bangkok.
Major General Chamlong is the 2nd of 9 PAD leaders to be arrested this week in Bangkok. Chaiwat Sinsuwong was arrested Friday.
Police warned that all 9 PAD leaders would be arrested if they left the Government House compound.
Chamlong held many positions in the Thai army. He was head of a Thai political party and for a time good friends with ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
