Swine Flu Toll in Thailand Now at 150 Confirmed Cases.
44 new cases of H1N1 flu have been reported by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health. This brings the official total to 150. According to the Permanent Secretary for Public Health, Dr. Prat Boonyawongvirot, most of the new cases are students who contracted the virus at school.
Dr. Boonyawongvirot requests that the public not panic as the flu symptoms are usually no different than regular flu symptoms and tend to only be serious in a few cases. He also suggests that the outbreaks are not severe in that a small minority of people exposed to the patients already infected has developed the disease.
He also suggests that maintaining good health and avoiding alcoholic drinks can help protect against infection.
Swine flu was assigned pandemic status by the World Health Organization yesterday.
Clinical trials of a vaccine are underway. The Thai government has requested an emergency supply when it becomes available.
