Baby Panda in Chiang Mai Names Narrowed to Four

A committee made up of members of the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand has chosen four names from thousands of suggestions submitted from throughout the kingdom for the new female baby panda recently born at the Chiang Mai Zoo.

The four possible names making up the shortlist are Thai-Jeen, Ying Ying, Lin Ping and Khwan Thai.

Anyone in the country can vote for any of the four names by sending a postcard to the members of the naming committee. The postcards will be available for sale in Bangkok and nearby regions on June 19 and in other areas on June 22.

The name chosen for the baby panda will be made public on Aug 12, Thai Mother’s Day.

The Chiang Mai Zoo is building a snow house for the cost of 60-million-baht for the baby panda’s parents, Xuang Xuang, Lin Hui and the panda cub, Prasertsak Boontrakulpoonthawee, person in charge of the panda research project announced Thursday.

The snow house, which has been under construction for more than a year, is anticipated to be complete and open to the public this month and occupied by the pandas during winter months.

Mr Prasertsak reported that the temperature inside the dome will be stay at a chilly minus 5 degrees Celsius.

The walkway to the snow house is built to resemble the Great Wall of China.
