Thai Community Radio to Come Under Government Supervision
About 1,200 owners and operators of small community radio stations have hurried to submit an application for advance registration so they will be at the top of the line up when the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issues licenses and frequencies designations
The NTC has informed more than 5,000 neighborhood radio stations all over the nation they must apply for registration.
Radio stations are have need of to meeting criteria set by the NTC to stop the problem of unwanted interference with larger mainstream radio stations and prevent the airing of undesirable programs which offend moral principles and break democratic rules.
Gen Chuchart Promprasit, NTC chairman stated that the rules for community radio stations are to be published in theRoyal Gazette.
All community radio stations are required to register within 30 days in order to be issued operating licenses
Prior to this, small community radio stations have by and large been allowed to operate without any controls. This has resulted in many being used for purely political propaganda.
