Thai Government Vows to End Violence in Southern Thailand in Three Years
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva spoke today about the violence in southern Thailand related to the Muslim insurgency which continues to take innocent lives. The government is setting a deadline of three years to end the violence which has recently included a shooting spree in a mosque in which 10 people were killed and 12 wounded. In the last 24 hours, a woman who was the wife of a village head man was shot to death, and a bomb was hurled into a truck killing an elderly woman and seriously wounding a 12 year old girl.
Mr. Abhisitt said “The insurgents are doing everything in their power to make us go back to using force to deal with the security strife. But we will stay the course.” He was referring to the new policy of peaceful development while rooting out the insurgency without provoking a backlash from the locals as happened with the previous government’s policy, leading to more violence. He went on to mention that the insurgents have been changing their tactics to try to create more conflict, and the government would have to change tactics as well to meet the crisis.
Thai security forces claim they have evidence to arrest the perpetrators of the mosque shooting. Two men were arrested trying to distribute leaflets accusing the security forces themselves of committing the murders.
