Burma Continues Preparing for Aung San Suu Kyi Trial
Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Prize winner, who will turn 64 this Friday, is currently being held at Rangoon’s infamous Insein prison on charged with breaching the terms of her house arrest after an incident where an American man swam to her lakeside house in May using makeshift flippers.
The Burmese Supreme Court heard arguments from her legal team stating that it should allow them to appeal a ban on two witnesses, who are both senior members of her political party.
Kyi Win, the lead lawyer for Aung San Suu Kyi, said the court expected to announce a decision Wednesday evening
“We hope our arguments for the two witnesses will be accepted. Our expectations are always as high as possible,” Kyi Win informed reporters.
“The usual procedure is that in the evening the high court posts the decision, so we have to wait until the evening to know whether they will accept or reject our application,” he said.
Nyan Win, the spokesperson for Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) and also a member of her defense team, said the court listened to arguments for about 45 minutes.
The courthouse where the trial will take place is under tight security.
