Swine Flu Stampedes Through Thailand
Official reported cases of H1N1 flu virus have reached 310, doubling in the last 24 hours. The Public Health Ministry has asked provincial health and hospital officials not to speak to the media about swine flu cases in an effort to calm public concern about the spread of the virus. Suphan Sithamma, spokesman for the ministry said a communication was being sent to senior health officials asking them not to speak publicly about numbers of flu cases or give details regarding patients. The reason given is that contradictory or incorrect information could lead to greater public fear than is appropriate to the actual situation.
The number of reported cases will continually be updated and not withheld, all other information such as who is affected and where outbreaks occur will be announced only by the Health ministry to avoid confusion.
According to a statement by Prime Minister Abhisit, travel across the borders of Thailand will not be restricted as the virus has turned out to be not as deadly as had been feared. Most cases are no more sever than common flu.
