Burma Discussed in Bangkok, Thailand Meeting with U.N. General Secretary
Thai Prime minister Abhisit Vejjajeva has joined the voices from around the world demanding the release of Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners held by the military dictatorship in Burma. Abhisit made the statements in a meeting with United Nations general secretary Ban Ki-moon when the two met on Saturday.
Mr Ban stopped in Bangkok on his return from a brief visit to Burma. The Burmese junta rebuffed his requests to confer with Mrs Suu Kyi who is currently on trial for allegedly being in violation of her house arrest status after an American unknowingly and uninvitedly snuck into her home and stayed for two days.
Even though Mr Ban’s appeal was rejected, Thailand maintained agreement with the UN in attempting to bring about national resolution to the problems of democracy in Burma, according to Thai government spokesman, Panitan Wattanayagorn.
Thailand holds the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations through the end of this year. Prime Minister Abhisit will travel to Burma on an official visit this month.
