Burma Claims to be Considering Amnesty
The Government of Burma is preparing to grant amnesty to political prisoners on humanitarian grounds so they can participate next year’s general elections, according to the country’s UN ambassador said Monday.
“At the request of the (UN) Secretary General (Ban Ki-moon), the Burma government is processing to grant amnesty on humanitarian grounds and with a view to enabling them to participate in the 2010 general elections,” Ambassador U Than Swe announced to a meeting of the UN Security Council.
The Ambassador gave the statement after Secretary Ban reprted to the 15-member council on his Myanamr visit earlier this month and cautioned the military junta to respect and ensure “inclusive, free and fair” general elections to be held next year.
