Coup Rumors Baseless
Swirling rumors that there would be a quiet military coup and that former deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusriphithak would be the head a new regime were entirely groundless, according to former supreme commander Gen Boonsang Niampradit
Quoting a source in the opposition Puea Thai party, several local media outlets reported yesterday that certain high-ranking military officers had become dissatisfied with the current Democrat-led government’s attempts to deal with economic problems, rampant social division and political conflict were planning to execute a military coup.
The supposed new Prime Minister would be Somkid Jatusriphithak, a former deputy prime minister from the Thai Rak Thai government, according to the rumors.
The law would be amended to pave the way for Mr Somkid, who is banned from politics for five years, to assume the government leadership.
Gen Boonsang said there was no basis to the content of the rumors.
