Thai Investment Laws Liberalized
Thai nationals will receive new investment rules to liberalize overseas investment according to The Bank of Thailand. Central Bank Governor Tarisa Watanagase stated that regulators will change foreign investment regulations to help ease foreign outflows and decrease pressure on the appreciating baht.
The Thai baht has appreciated by 2% since January, thanks to steady trade surpluses and overseas fund inflows.
While the central bank maintains that the currency is moving in relation to others in the Asian area, exporters and some officials have expressed apprehension that more gains could weaken the price competitiveness of Thai exports in the worldwide market.
Regulators have already significantly alleviated many regulations on overseas speculation, giving Thais an opportunity to invest in overseas funds centered on stocks, commodities and fixed-income securities. Regulators have also started allowing Thais to invest in foreign securities.
