Thai Fugitives to Face New Agency
The Prime Minister’s cabinet has endorsed the Justice Ministry’s suggestion to create an Office of Legal Execution to guarantee stringent enforcement of the law and warrants issued for the apprehension of renegade criminal suspects, both at home and out of the country, Justice Minister Peerapan Saleerathwiphak stated on Wednesday.
The new office will be connected to the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Justice and will be responsible for ensuring strict enforcement of the law, encouraging competence in the legal process, and to track down wanted suspects under arrest warrants, in Thailand and elsewhere.
There are currently arrest warrants issued for about 260,000 suspects who remain in hiding. Mr Peerapan claimed the new legal branch was not created just to bring fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra back to Thailand for trial.
