Cheaper Diesel for Thai Drivers
Drivers may once again take pleasure in cheaper diesel by two baht per liter starting next week.
Diesel prices currently are 26.09 baht per liter at service stations operated by PTT, the nation’s largest diesel seller.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is backing a scheme by Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij for diesel price intercession, despite stiff resistance from Energy Ministry officials.
Just two days prior, Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul had snubbed Mr Korn’s proposal, suggesting authorities reduce fuel excise taxes if they desired to reduce diesel prices. Mr Wannarat maintains that the fuel taxes collected by the Oil Fund are vital to fund long-term expansion of alternative fuels.
Abhisit met late Thursday night with Mr Korn and energy representatives to seek a answer to the disagreement.
An Energy Minister administrator said on Thursday that oil prices would have to reach $90 a barrel, contrasted with $71 now, before subsidies would come back.
